Asteroids
Ages: 9-12 years old
Coach: Luis Soler
Goals: To reinforce proper
swimming technique in all four competitive swim strokes. Increased endurance,
speed and knowledge (including components of a workout and terminology) will be
attained by the swimmer. Swimmers will be exposed to interval and endurance
training and will be able to read and follow a pace clock. Active participation
in swim meets and excellent attendance (including Saturday practice) is
essential for the development of the athlete. Swimmers at this level have Junior
Olympic (J.O.) qualifying times in their respective events. In order to succeed
in this group, swimmers should have a healthy attitude, demonstrate consistency
at practice and strive to become well-rounded, highly-competitive athletes.
Requirements: Swimmers must be able to perform a
500 freestyle in less than 8 minutes and 10 X 50 freestyle on a :50 second
interval. Final entry is dependant upon an evaluation with the coach to examine
the swimmer's knowledge of drills (detailed descriptions for each drill and why
they are performed is expected) as well as stroke technique (including being
able to perform the starting position, race starts, breastroke pull-out, turns
and finishes).
Competition: Swimmers will participate in ABC, BC,
& Sub J.O. meets throughout the year and the end-of-season Division II and
Junior Olympic championships.
Required Training Equipment: Kick board, pull-buoy,
fins, goggles and running shoes (for days when swimmers perform calisthenics and
dry-land exercises).
Required Meet Equipment: Team suit, Comets
yellow & blue t-shirts, yellow team cap (if cap is desired) and goggles that are
appropriate for use when diving from the competition blocks.
